Golden Century – Haymarket

“Dinner at Golden Century?” Said the boss of Sydney Gold Traders, our client. “SURE!” We all cancelled our Monday plans, and made our way over to the rumoured “most expensive Chinese restaurant in Chinatown”.

When we arrived, I noticed that it is not just a single floor of a building. I’m not sure how many floors this restaurant is made up of, but it looks huge. We were greeted with rows of fresh seafood in tanks.

Pretty awesome isn’t it?

We sat around, chatted a lot. It’s fun when there’s a lot of people. Looked at the menu. We decided to go with one of those giant crabs. So huge!

Our 1st dish was the abalone steamboat that I recommended. Flash frozen and thinly slice abalone cooked in a simple stock.

Such beautiful thin slices.

Just love table service. Someone cooking your food in front of you, or putting food onto your plate for you.

Our individual bowls.

The soup is so sweet and delicious. I can eat this all day, I think. Actually if I could I would.

Next up is the salt and pepper fried crab (king crab? Alaskan crab?) I love it. A handful of antihistamine later, I ate all the crab I could have dreamed of.

I want to lick it, chew on it. And I want it now!

The most important thing in a Chinese restaurant is the XO sauce made in house. Or served, whatever. This one is of a good spice kick, good heat to it, cut up pieces of dried scallops and other good bits. Pity you had to pay extra for it, but we finished every bit of it.

Other dishes, ah, can’t remember much about it. It’s good I suppose. There’s roast duck. Good crispy skin and well seasoned meat.

Tofu minced. Fried and great with XO sauce.

Chicken with dried scallops. Looks really tender. Didn’t get to eat that one.

Greens. Good greens. Love broccoli.

.

Black pepper beef cubes. Amazingly tender, I couldn’t believe it myself. Each piece was bite size and just really tender.

More vegetables, with a side of meat. Standard stir-fry.

Waited forever for the crab roe fried rice. FOREVER!! As in, someone forgot our fried rice. Turned up in the end, so I guess it was good. It was the only carb for the day. Check out the creepy eyes.

Yum, a bit greasy but full on flavour. Lots of ingredients stuffed into it.

Time for dessert. All the complimentary stuff.

Standard, watermelon.

Walnut cookies and fried wonton’s skin with powdered sugar. Good cookies.

Sweet potato soup. It’s good.
